How 2024’s Climate Corps Fellows are Driving India’s Sustainable Future

A Glimpse into the Impactful Journeys Seen in the Ashoka-Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps Fellowship

What Does Climate Change Mean to You? Is it the rising heat that scorches cities, the erratic monsoons that disrupt lives, or the quiet dread of time running out? Climate change isn’t just a topic for global summits; it’s woven into daily life.

At the forefront of tackling this crisis is the Ashoka-Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps Fellowship, empowering professionals to drive meaningful change on the ground.

Where Vision Meets Action for a Greener Future

Since 2008, the Climate Corps Fellowship has made a significant impact, wherein fellows identified ways to cut over 2 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. With 1,200+ alumni worldwide, the programme highlights skilled leadership’s role in driving climate solutions across sectors like energy, industry, public administration, and technology. In India, the partnership between AshokaX and the Environmental Defense Fund has integrated dynamic individuals with leading public and private organisations. This year, 16 outstanding fellows tackled key areas including decarbonisation strategies, climate policy development, carbon markets, and sustainability reporting with reputed organisations such as Amazon, Mahindra Group, Larsen & Toubro, and public institutions such as the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC).

The fellows’ projects are set to deliver impactful outcomes, including substantial greenhouse gas reductions, improved monsoon preparedness, and enhanced water management efficiency. Arvind Kumar, with a foundation in Development Economics, brought his expertise to improve municipal services in Assam, providing actionable insights for the state’s Ten Cities Development Program. Piyasi Mitra helped Blue Dart with ESG assessments, including baseline analysis, gap identification, and materiality assessment, focusing on environmental disclosures aligned with ESG standards. Meanwhile, Shruti Saumya turned her analytical acumen toward Amazon’s water sustainability goals, devising scalable solutions to optimise water usage.

Vibrant network meet-ups in Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai brought together Climate Corps alumni, hosts, partners, and supporters, fostering knowledge-sharing and strengthening collaborative efforts.

Diverse Fields, One Goal

Coming from various parts of India and with educational backgrounds from top institutes like IITs and IIMs, the 2024 fellows brought distinctive skills and fresh perspectives to their host organisations. This year, the fellows’ projects converged on one mission accelerating the path to sustainability.

Divyesh Tyagi, with experience spanning engineering and management, assessed Mahindra Group’s agribusiness operations, positioning the company as a leader in sustainability and planet-positive practices. Harshanth R, blending civil engineering with sustainable management,

advanced Lohum’s lithium-ion battery recycling processes. Meanwhile, Baksheesh Sachar, equipped with expertise in public policy analysis, redefined how Zomato tracks and reports its environmental impact.

The successful work of these fellows highlights the power of multidisciplinary thinking and a commitment to address critical climate challenges with actionable and scalable strategies.

Celebrating Excellence: The 2024 Climate Corps Annual Summit

The 2024 Climate Corps Annual Summit in November was more than a closing chapter—it was a celebration of impact, innovation, and collaboration. As fellows gathered virtually for the summit to reflect on their transformative journeys, the spotlight shone brightly on three

exceptional individuals whose projects stood out for their meaningful contributions to climate action.

Shankar N received the Business Case Award for his work with Mahindra & Mahindra’s Automotive & Farm sectors by crafting a robust strategy to cut Scope 1 & 2 emissions. The Innovation Award was presented to Amruth Chinnappa for developing a bespoke Climate Scenario Analysis tool while working at Larsen & Toubro. Rounding out the honours, Sanjena N.D. received the Collaboration Award for her project with TNGCC for designing a framework for carbon credit generation.

Starting 2025 with Renewed Hope

The need for professionals in the climate space has never been greater. Organisations see the value of embedding sustainability into their operations but need talented individuals to lead the way. Here’s where collaboration really matters to develop impactful solutions.

Thus, by equipping future leaders with skills and networks, the Climate Corps Fellowship ensures sustainability becomes a reality. 2025 could be your year to make a real impact. The fellowship could be your chance to create a future where sustainability is not just a goal but a way of life. Join us to be part of the change.
